Sleeping is important for human, especially for baby and kids. There is still indefinite conclusion about sleeping time for big kids, but parents do not have to worry about it too much. Sleeping time consist of two periods: nighttime and daytime. Parents need to know the underlying factors about sleeping. Kids are different from adult, but they still have some similarities based on biological structure. Normally, sleeping happens when body is tired and needs to balance the metabolism. Kids are in the period which growth rate is very extensive. This factor also involves spending time for sleeping.
Sleeping Time for Big Kids
Preschooler or kids with age two to four are recommended to sleep ten to thirteen hours for nighttime. That is very long sleeping, but necessary. During sleeping, digestive system starts to work hard then produces nutrients for growth. Nerve and respiratory system wants to idle for a moment. As you know, sleeping is also good to control emotion. Of course, emotional state in children is different from adult. When kids reach six years old, sleeping time during night is reduced to eight to ten hours.
Besides sleeping at night, another time is daytime. Normally, sleeping time for big kids in daytime is approximately one to two hours. Sleep during daytime is necessary when kids are in two to five years old. They should get sleep for about one to three hours a day. Actually, sleeping daytime depends on several factors. Sometimes, kids want to be more active at day. They play excessively until exhausted and get sleep long hours at night. Parents do not have to worry about such thing.
Kids in elementary school do not get much time to sleep at day. In particular country, sleeping is part of curriculum for kindergarten and elementary school. School provides place to let kids sleep at day. Sleeping time for big kids is decreased after they reach ten years old. Of course, you cannot ask them to sleep due to age preference.
One advantage of sleeping time is the schedule for their activity. Parents are able to arrange playtime or lesson session. Besides them, kids do not have to sleep during journey or another home. Parents can go home early. Preventing kids not to sleep is not good for their body and emotional state. If taking nap is impossible, it is better to reduce excess activity, especially when they go to school. If anything is unusual, it is better to consult with expert or doctor.
Sleeping habit is as important as sleeping time. Habit determines how much sleep you need in one day. For children, habit might be easily changed due to body growth. The example of sleeping habit is to take nap at day in two hours. As mentioned above, kids with age two to five years old are easily to do such habit. Unfortunately, parent cannot do similar way to ask children with age seven years old.
Sleeping time for big kids will gradually decreased, but habit should be consistent. At night, you find difficulty to let children sleep due to excessive sleeping time at day. In this case, parents can make sets of rule to modify sleeping habit. During daytime sleeping, parent will make children awake after two hours of sleeping. From this moment, you may see whether children are at stable state or not when they awake.
One problem is called sleeping deprived. Several signs will determine this problem immediately. Kids will sleep quickly in unusual place, such as car and sofa. They cannot hold the temper when awake unregularly. This emotional state resembles sleeping issue in adults. Parent should take this matter seriously to prevent sleeping time for big kids abruptly. Sleeping time and habit will affect their growth and development in the future.
